Bringing home your new puppy is an exciting time, and you want everything to go perfectly. You’ve spent months imagining the insta worthy photos to introduce your new pup, the holidays with their adorable outfit. With thoughtful preparation and a little guidance, you can make the transition smooth for everyone, and you’ll be creating lifelong memories in no time. Here’s how to set your puppy (and your family) up for success from the very first day.
Puppy Proof Your Space
Welcoming a puppy means creating a safe, secure environment where they can explore and grow confidently.
Remove Hazards
- Tuck away electrical cords, keep toxic plants out of reach, and secure cleaning supplies or medications in cabinets.
Secure Your Trash
- Puppies love to explore and might rummage through the garbage. Invest in a pet proof trash can to prevent messes and protect your puppy’s health.
Block Off No-Go Areas
- Use baby gates to limit access to rooms or staircases. This also helps create defined spaces for your puppy to roam safely.
Involve the Kids
- Encourage your children to pick up small toys and other items from the floor to help keep the puppy’s environment safe. This can also be a great way to teach responsibility.
Kid Friendly Tip: Make it a game! Challenge your kids to a “puppy-proofing scavenger hunt” to find and fix potential hazards.
Stock Up on Essentials
Having the right supplies on hand makes those first days much easier. Here’s what you’ll need:
Feeding and Hydration
- Food and water bowls: Stainless steel or ceramic options are durable and easy to clean. Look for non-slip designs to prevent spills.
- High quality puppy food: We feed and recommend Royal Canin Small Breed Puppy Food. Transitioning to a new food? Do it gradually to avoid tummy troubles.
Comfort and Safety
- Crate or playpen: A cozy, secure spot helps your puppy feel safe. Select one that’s appropriately sized for their breed and growth. For our Cavapoos we recommend around 30″.
- Comfortable bed: Choose both something washable and soft that fits inside their crate, as well as a bed for them to relax in throughout the house.
- Collar, leash, and ID tag: Ensure the collar fits snugly but comfortably. Include your name and phone number on the tag.
Entertainment and Grooming
- Toys: Chew toys are essential for teething, while plush and puzzle toys keep your puppy entertained. See lots of favorite options here.
- Grooming supplies: Stock up on puppy shampoo, a soft brush, and nail clippers. A gentle grooming routine helps keep them healthy and accustomed to being handled. Here’s a list of my favorite grooming supplies.
Set Up a Puppy Zone
Designate a specific area where your puppy can relax and explore safely. We love to use this fencing that attaches directly to each side of the crate.
- Include their crate, bed, and a few toys to create a cozy retreat.
- Place the zone in a low traffic area to minimize stress during their adjustment period.
- Let kids help decorate or organize this space to foster excitement and involvement.
Kid Friendly Tip: Encourage kids to draw signs or labels for the puppy zone to make it feel extra special.
Establish a Routine
Puppies thrive on consistency, and a predictable schedule will help everyone in the household adjust.
Feeding and Potty Training
- Stick to set meal times to regulate digestion and potty breaks.
- Take your puppy outside frequently, especially after meals, naps, or playtime. Encourage everyone to use the same phrase for potty time, such as “Go potty.”
Sleep and Rest
- Puppies need 18–20 hours of sleep daily. Make sure their sleeping area is calm and undisturbed.
Align the puppy’s schedule with your family’s daily routines for a seamless fit into your life.
Plan the First Few Days
The initial days are crucial for building trust and setting expectations.
Day 1: Arrival
- Bring your puppy home during a quiet time, such as a weekend. Let them explore their new environment at their own pace.
Family Introductions
- Allow each family member to meet the puppy calmly. Let the puppy approach on their terms.
Meeting Other Pets
- Supervise introductions to other household pets carefully, and keep initial interactions short and positive.
Create a memorable “Welcome Home” experience with family photos or a small celebration to make this milestone special for everyone.
Schedule a Vet Visit
Book a visit with your veterinarian within 72 hours of bringing your puppy home. Early health checks ensure your puppy is off to a great start.
Key Topics to Cover
- Confirm vaccinations and discuss a vaccine schedule.
- Ask about deworming, flea prevention, and microchipping.
- Address any questions about your puppy’s diet, growth, or behavior.
Teach kids to participate in the visit by helping ask questions or taking notes, fostering a sense of responsibility.
Safe Socialization
Socialization isn’t just about meeting people, it’s about helping your puppy remain calm and neutral in various situations.
Start Early
- Introduce your puppy to different sounds, surfaces, and environments while keeping experiences positive.
Encourage Neutrality
- Teach your puppy to stay calm around new people, places, and things. Praise them for relaxed behavior rather than over excitement.
Involve the Family
- Take walks as a family, exposing your puppy to strollers, bicycles, or neighbors. Before puppies are fully vaccinated, it’s recommended to carry them, as well as follow safe walking guidelines (5 minutes for every month of age) to support proper joint development.
Controlled Exposure
- Use playdates with other vaccinated puppies or quiet visits to pet-friendly spaces for safe socialization.
Helping your puppy develop a balanced, confident demeanor will set them up for a lifetime of stress-free interactions.
Bond Through Play and Affection
Building a strong bond with your puppy starts with intentional quality time.
Playtime
- Enjoy family walks or backyard playtime to create positive memories.
- Puppies have short attention spans, so keep activities brief and fun.
Cuddles and Calm Moments
- Snuggle sessions after playtime help build trust and reinforce your role as their safe space.
Welcoming a puppy into your family is a heartwarming adventure filled with joy and learning. By planning ahead and involving everyone in the process, you’ll create a harmonious home where your puppy can thrive. With patience, love, and consistency, your newest addition will quickly become an irreplaceable part of your family.
